The Root Chakra: Meaning, Signs of a Block and How to Heal ItA Reiki Master's guide to the first chakra
Safety is not something you earn. It is where you begin.
What is the root chakra?
The root chakra, called Muladhara in Sanskrit, is the first of the seven main chakras. It sits at the base of the spine and is associated with safety, stability, belonging and the sense that your basic needs are met. The name means something close to "root support," and it is the foundation the other six chakras rest on.
When it feels steady, people describe feeling grounded, secure in their body and able to rest. When it doesn't, the whole system can feel like it is bracing.
Red is the traditional color of the root chakra, and it is the color I use here. A few systems work with black, brown or deep earth tones for the root instead, which speaks to the same grounding quality in a different way.

Signs of a blocked or out-of-balance
root chakra
These are some of the ways people describe it. You don't need to see yourself in all of them.
Never quite feeling safe
A low hum of worry that something will go wrong, even when nothing is wrong right now.
Constant scanning
You read the room, the tone of a message, the mood of a house, always on watch.
Tension around money
Money feels like something that can disappear, no matter how much is there.
Feeling ungrounded
Scattered, spacey, floating, or like you are not fully landed in your body.
Difficulty resting
Rest feels unearned, unsafe, or like something you have to finish earning first.
Trouble trusting support
You hold everything yourself because depending on anyone feels risky.
Fear of change
Even good change is hard on your body, and you hold on to what is familiar.
A body that stays braced
Tight jaw, clenched belly, tired legs, a nervous system that doesn't settle easily.
Recognizing yourself here doesn't mean something is wrong with you. These patterns usually began as sensible ways to stay safe. They are descriptions from energy traditions, not medical symptoms.
Blocked, overactive and underactive
Energy traditions often describe a chakra as underactive (shut down), overactive (working too hard) or blocked. For the root, underactive tends to look like anxiety, feeling ungrounded, or chronic worry about survival and money. Overactive tends to look like rigidity, hoarding, resistance to change, or a need to control everything so nothing can go wrong.
Both come from the same place: a body that learned it had to protect itself. For a wider look at signs across all seven centers, see blocked chakras.
Why the root gets stuck:
the nervous system
I don't think of a blocked chakra as a clog. I think of it as a nervous system that learned to stay on alert. If safety wasn't steady early on, the body can keep scanning for danger long after the danger has passed.
That is why I always start here. A body that doesn't feel safe can't settle into anything else. If this sounds familiar, these pages go deeper into the body side of it: nervous system regulation, the window of tolerance and signs of a dysregulated nervous system.
The root is often where family patterns land. If you recognize one, the father wound page is a good companion to this one.
The root chakra and money
The root is where security lives, which is why it is so often called the "money chakra." Money is a stand-in for safety, and a body that learned scarcity can brace around earning, spending and receiving.
If this is the part that feels loudest, the money chakra page explains how the root, sacral and solar plexus work together around money, and the money wound page goes into where the beliefs begin.
The root chakra and the first gate of Inanna
In my work in the Temple of Mysteries, I teach Inanna's descent through seven gates. At the first gate, Safety, she releases her crown, the symbol of her authority over her own ground.
What she gives up is at the top of the body, but what shakes is felt at the root: her sense of security. We do the same. When something at the top of your life gets taken, your body feels it as a loss of safety, in the belly, the legs, the ground beneath you. As we move down the seven gates, we move up the seven chakras, and on the way back the path reverses.

Reiki and the root chakra
Reiki is a gentle practice of energetic support, and many people experience it as deeply restful. I'm not claiming it treats or cures anything. I offer it as a complement, a way to give the body a quiet space to settle.
Verbal Reiki
I use my voice alongside the Reiki, guiding you through imagery and somatic awareness while the Reiki is held, so the body can feel safe instead of being told to.
More than one center
Nearly every activation I record works through the chakras, and I guide the energy to more than one. The root is almost always part of it.
New to Reiki? What Is Reiki? explains it plainly, and Reiki chakra balancing covers what a session is like. If you would rather have this one on one, see my Reiki sessions.

Listen on YouTubeA simple root chakra practice
Offered as reflection and not as a prescription. Go slowly and stop any time.
- Sit or stand with both feet on the floor, and feel the contact under your heels and the balls of your feet.
- Place a hand low on your belly, and a hand on the back of your hips if that feels steady.
- Breathe in through your nose, and let the exhale be a little longer than the inhale, as if letting something drop into the ground.
- Quietly say to yourself, I am safe here, right now. Notice if your body agrees, argues or goes quiet. All three are information.
- Stay for a few minutes, then wiggle your toes, look around the room, and name three things you can see.
If this brings up something heavy, stop and ground in whatever way helps. A licensed trauma-informed therapist can offer support that goes beyond what a Reiki practice can.
Root chakra affirmations
Short enough to believe. Say them slowly, or keep the one that settles you.

Frequently asked questions
What is the root chakra?
The root chakra, called Muladhara in Sanskrit, is the first of the seven main chakras in yogic and energy traditions. It is located at the base of the spine and is associated with safety, stability, belonging and having your basic needs met. Its traditional color is red, though some systems also work with black or brown earth tones.
Where is the root chakra located?
At the base of the spine, around the pelvic floor. Many people feel it in their hips, legs and feet, which is why grounding practices often start there.
What are the signs of a blocked root chakra?
People commonly describe feeling unsafe or on edge, anxious about money or survival, ungrounded, unable to rest, and hesitant to trust support. These are descriptions from energy traditions, not medical symptoms. If something is affecting your health, please see a doctor.
Is a blocked root chakra the same as a dysregulated nervous system?
They are different frameworks that often describe the same lived experience. The root chakra is an energy-tradition idea. Nervous system regulation is a body-based idea. I find it helpful to hold both, and to start with the body feeling safe. My page on nervous system regulation is a good place to begin.
How do you heal or unblock the root chakra?
There is no single method, and I don't promise outcomes. Many people find that grounding the body, slowing the breath, spending time outside, building small routines of safety, and working with a trauma-informed therapist all help. Reiki and guided meditation can sit alongside that care as complementary practices.
Can Reiki balance the root chakra?
Many people experience Reiki as deeply grounding, and I often feel the root center respond during a session. I can't promise a specific result, and Reiki is a complement to medical and mental health care, never a replacement. The page on Reiki chakra balancing explains what a session is like.
What is the root chakra mantra and frequency?
In the yogic tradition the seed sound (bija mantra) of the root chakra is LAM. You will also see frequencies such as 396 Hz attached to it in modern sound healing. These come from tradition and practice, not from settled science, so treat them as something to try if they feel good. See chakra frequencies and sound healing for more.
Is the root chakra the money chakra?
The popular label "money chakra" mostly points to the root, because the root is about security and support. The sacral chakra is tied to what you create, and the solar plexus to the energy that helps you produce it. The money chakra page goes further, and the money wound page covers where money beliefs begin.
