What is the crown chakra?

The crown chakra, called Sahasrara in Sanskrit, is the seventh of the seven main chakras. It sits at the top of the head and is associated with connection, meaning, stillness and the sense of being part of something larger than yourself. The name is often translated as "thousand-petaled."

When it is open, people describe feeling connected, at peace with not knowing, and able to trust that life has a shape even when they can't see it. When it isn't, there can be a sense of disconnection, emptiness, or searching that never quite lands.

Violet is the traditional color of the crown chakra, and it is the color I use here. Many systems also work with white for the crown, the color that holds all the others together, and some use gold. Violet and white speak to the same thing: the point where the individual meets the whole.

Signs of a blocked or out-of-balance
crown chakra

These are some of the ways people describe it. You don't need to see yourself in all of them.

Feeling disconnected

From yourself, other people, or anything larger than you.

A search that never lands

You keep looking for the next teaching, teacher or practice, and nothing settles.

Spiritual bypassing

Talk of light and love covers over feelings you haven't felt yet.

Emptiness or a lack of meaning

Life looks fine on paper and feels flat underneath.

Feeling stuck in your head

You live above the neck and lose touch with the body.

Rigid beliefs

Certainty feels safer than not knowing, and doubt feels like a threat.

Cynicism or shutting down

You closed the door on anything spiritual after being let down.

Wearing a role

You show up as who you're supposed to be, and not as yourself.

Recognizing yourself here doesn't mean something is wrong with you. These patterns usually began as sensible ways to stay safe. They are descriptions from energy traditions, not medical symptoms.

∞¤∞

Blocked, overactive and underactive

Energy traditions often describe a chakra as underactive (shut down), overactive (working too hard) or blocked. For the crown, underactive tends to look like disconnection, cynicism, a lack of meaning, or rigid thinking. Overactive tends to look like spiritual bypassing, escaping the body or daily life, feeling superior or special, or being so "up" in the spiritual that the practical falls apart.

Both come from the same place: a body that learned it had to protect itself. For a wider look at signs across all seven centers, see blocked chakras.

Why the crown disconnects:
too far from the body

I don't think of a blocked chakra as a clog. I think of it as a nervous system that learned what keeps it safe. When the lower centers feel unsafe, one way the system copes is to leave: to go up and out, into the mind, into spirituality, into anywhere but the body. Connection to something larger can't be built on a body that is bracing.

That is why I teach the crown last, and from the ground up. If your spiritual life has ever felt like escaping, you are not alone. The crown can open only as far as the body feels safe to stay.

The body side of this is in nervous system regulation. A connected crown rests on a settled body.

∞¤∞

The crown chakra and money

The crown is not a money center, but it is where meaning lives, and many people find that meaning shapes how they relate to money: what it is for, what is enough, and whether receiving is allowed.

The money chakra page explains how the root, sacral and solar plexus work together around money, and the money wound page goes into where the beliefs begin. The crown is what keeps all of it connected to something that matters.

The crown chakra and the seventh gate of Inanna

In my work in the Temple of Mysteries, I teach Inanna's descent through seven gates. At the seventh gate, Authenticity, the royal robe comes off her body, the last covering. She goes through as herself, and nothing else.

What she gives up is the last covering, but what shakes is felt at the crown: the roles, titles and spiritual identities we wear to feel like someone. Connection with the whole can't happen through a costume. As we move down the seven gates, we move up the seven chakras, and on the way back the path reverses.

Reiki and the crown chakra

Reiki is a gentle practice of energetic support, and many people experience it as deeply restful. I'm not claiming it treats or cures anything. I offer it as a complement, a way to give the body a quiet space to settle.

Verbal Reiki

I use my voice alongside the Reiki, guiding you through imagery and somatic awareness while the Reiki is held, so the connection can arrive through the body and not around it.

More than one center

Nearly every activation I record works through the chakras, and I guide the energy to more than one. The crown is often part of it, especially around connection, meaning and authenticity.

New to Reiki? What Is Reiki? explains it plainly, and Reiki chakra balancing covers what a session is like. If you would rather have this one on one, see my Reiki sessions.

A simple crown chakra practice

Offered as reflection and not as a prescription. Go slowly and stop any time.

  1. Sit or lie down comfortably, and feel the weight of your body on the surface beneath you.
  2. Place your feet on the floor or your hands on your belly, and take a few slow breaths to arrive in the body first.
  3. Bring your attention to the top of your head, and imagine soft light resting there like a warm hand. There is nothing to reach for.
  4. Ask quietly, What if I was never separate?, and let the answer be a feeling, an image or nothing at all.
  5. Finish by grounding: press your feet into the floor, name three things you can see, and take three slow breaths.

If this brings up something heavy, stop and ground in whatever way helps. A licensed trauma-informed therapist can offer support that goes beyond what a Reiki practice can.

∞¤∞

Crown chakra affirmations

Short enough to believe. Say them slowly, or keep the one that settles you.

I am connected, and I am here

I do not have to leave my body to find meaning

I am held by something larger than me

I can rest in not knowing

I show up as myself

I am whole as I am

Frequently asked questions

What is the crown chakra?

The crown chakra, called Sahasrara in Sanskrit, is the seventh of the seven main chakras in yogic and energy traditions. It is located at the top of the head and is associated with connection, meaning, stillness and spirit. Its traditional color is violet, though many systems also use white, and some use gold.

Why is the crown chakra violet or white?

Both are used. Violet is the more common color in modern chakra charts and the one I use here. White is used in many systems because it holds all the colors together, which fits the crown as the center of wholeness. Some systems use gold. None of these is wrong, and they point to the same idea.

Where is the crown chakra located?

At the top of the head. It is an idea from energy traditions and not a physical structure. If you have persistent headaches, dizziness or other symptoms, please see a doctor.

What are the signs of a blocked crown chakra?

People commonly describe disconnection, emptiness, a search that never lands, spiritual bypassing, or rigid thinking. These are descriptions from energy traditions, not medical symptoms.

How do you open the crown chakra safely?

Slowly, and from the ground up. Many people find that grounding, time in nature, meditation, body-based practice and a trauma-informed therapist all help, and that forcing spiritual experiences tends to backfire. Reiki and guided meditation can sit alongside that care as complementary practices.

What is spiritual bypassing, and how does it relate to the crown?

Spiritual bypassing is using spiritual ideas or practices to avoid feelings, needs or hard realities. It is often described as a crown pattern because it reaches up while skipping the body. The remedy is usually to come back down and feel what is there, with support.

Can Reiki balance the crown chakra?

Many people experience Reiki as quieting and connecting around the head and crown. I can't promise a specific result, and Reiki is a complement to medical and mental health care, never a replacement. The page on Reiki chakra balancing explains what a session is like.

What is the crown chakra mantra and frequency?

In the yogic tradition the crown chakra is often paired with the seed sound OM, or with silence. You will also see frequencies such as 963 Hz attached to it in modern sound healing. These come from tradition and practice, not from settled science, so treat them as something to try if they feel good. See chakra frequencies and sound healing for more.

You were never separate from it. Connection rests on a settled body. You can arrive as yourself.
