The Throat Chakra: Meaning, Signs of a Block and How to Heal ItA Reiki Master's guide to the fifth chakra
Your voice was never the problem.
What is the throat chakra?
The throat chakra, called Vishuddha in Sanskrit, is the fifth of the seven main chakras. It sits at the base of the throat and is associated with voice, truth, expression and the ability to say what is real for you. The name is often translated as "especially pure" or "purification."
When it is open, people describe speaking clearly, saying no without a spiral, and feeling that what they say matches what they feel. When it isn't, words can get stuck, soften until they say nothing, or come out sharper than intended.
Blue is the traditional color of the throat chakra, and it is the color I use here. You will also see it described as light blue, sky blue or turquoise in some systems, which speaks to the same openness and clarity.

Signs of a blocked or out-of-balance
throat chakra
These are some of the ways people describe it. You don't need to see yourself in all of them.
A tight throat or jaw
Swallowing words feels physical, and the jaw or neck holds tension.
Saying yes and meaning no
You agree out loud, then resent it privately.
Words that won't come
You know what you want to say, and in the moment it disappears.
Over-explaining
You say a lot to make sure no one is upset, and still feel unheard.
Fear of being judged for your truth
Speaking up feels like risking the relationship.
Talking over or past others
Your voice gets loud when you feel unsafe, and listening gets hard.
Going quiet to keep the peace
Silence has become the way you stay safe.
A voice that doesn't feel like yours
You say what is expected, and it doesn't land as true.
Recognizing yourself here doesn't mean something is wrong with you. These patterns usually began as sensible ways to stay safe. They are descriptions from energy traditions, not medical symptoms.
Blocked, overactive and underactive
Energy traditions often describe a chakra as underactive (shut down), overactive (working too hard) or blocked. For the throat, underactive tends to look like silence, shyness, swallowing words, or difficulty asking for what you need. Overactive tends to look like talking over others, over-explaining, gossip, or needing to be heard so badly that listening gets lost.
Both come from the same place: a body that learned it had to protect itself. For a wider look at signs across all seven centers, see blocked chakras.
Why the throat tightens:
safety before speech
I don't think of a blocked chakra as a clog. I think of it as a nervous system that learned what keeps it safe. If speaking up once cost you love, belonging or peace, the body learned to hold the words. The throat tightens because it is protecting you.
That is often the fawn response or people-pleasing at work, or sometimes a freeze. These pages go deeper: people-pleasing, the fawn response, the freeze response and core wounds.
The body side of this is in nervous system regulation. A throat that has been quiet for years doesn't need to be forced open.
The throat chakra and money
Your voice is also how you ask: for a rate, for payment, for what the work is worth. Many people can do the work and then go quiet when it is time to name the price. That is a throat pattern as much as a money one.
The money chakra page explains how the root, sacral and solar plexus work together around money, and the money wound page goes into where the beliefs begin. The throat is what lets any of it be said out loud.
The throat chakra and the fifth gate of Inanna
In my work in the Temple of Mysteries, I teach Inanna's descent through seven gates. At the fifth gate, Attachment, the gold ring leaves her wrist, the binding and everything it bound her to.
What she gives up is worn at the wrist, but what shakes is felt in the throat: the words we hold back to stay attached, to a person, a role or an image. The throat can't speak freely while every sentence is checked against what it might cost the bond. As we move down the seven gates, we move up the seven chakras, and on the way back the path reverses.

Reiki and the throat chakra
Reiki is a gentle practice of energetic support, and many people experience it as deeply restful. I'm not claiming it treats or cures anything. I offer it as a complement, a way to give the body a quiet space to settle.
Verbal Reiki
I use my voice alongside the Reiki, guiding you through imagery and somatic awareness while the Reiki is held, so the throat can soften without being pushed to speak.
More than one center
Nearly every activation I record works through the chakras, and I guide the energy to more than one. The throat is often part of it, especially around speaking, boundaries and truth.
New to Reiki? What Is Reiki? explains it plainly, and Reiki chakra balancing covers what a session is like. If you would rather have this one on one, see my Reiki sessions.
A free activation for speaking your worth
Throat Chakra Reiki Activation | New Moon in Taurus | Speak Your Worth is a Reiki activation I recorded for the throat. It is free on my YouTube channel. Find a quiet spot, and let your jaw and neck soften as you listen.

Listen on YouTubeA simple throat chakra practice
Offered as reflection and not as a prescription. Go slowly and stop any time.
- Sit comfortably and let your shoulders drop. Rest a hand lightly at the base of your throat.
- Breathe slowly, and notice if your jaw, tongue or throat are holding. Let them soften a little on each exhale.
- Hum quietly on a low, easy note for a few breaths, and feel the vibration under your hand.
- Finish the sentence silently, What I have been holding back isβ¦, and let whatever arises be enough. You don't have to say it to anyone yet.
- Rest a hand on your chest, take three slow breaths, and let your voice return to normal.
If this brings up something heavy, stop and ground in whatever way helps. A licensed trauma-informed therapist can offer support that goes beyond what a Reiki practice can.
Throat chakra affirmations
Short enough to believe. Say them slowly, or keep the one that settles you.
My voice belongs to me
I can say no and stay safe
My truth does not have to be perfect to be spoken
I listen inward before I speak
I am allowed to take up space
I say what is true, gently

Frequently asked questions
What is the throat chakra?
The throat chakra, called Vishuddha in Sanskrit, is the fifth of the seven main chakras in yogic and energy traditions. It is located at the base of the throat and is associated with voice, truth, expression and communication. Its traditional color is blue, though some systems describe it as light blue or turquoise.
Where is the throat chakra located?
At the base of the throat, including the neck and jaw. It is an idea from energy traditions and not the physical throat or thyroid. If you have a persistent sore throat, voice change or trouble swallowing, please see a doctor.
What are the signs of a blocked throat chakra?
People commonly describe a tight throat or jaw, swallowing words, saying yes when they mean no, over-explaining, or going quiet to keep the peace. These are descriptions from energy traditions, not medical symptoms.
How is the throat chakra connected to people-pleasing?
Many people find the throat tightens when speaking up once cost them love or safety, so the body learned to hold the words. That is often the fawn response or people-pleasing, and not a flaw. In my Temple of Mysteries work this is the fifth gate of Inanna, Attachment.
How do you unblock the throat chakra?
There is no single method, and I don't promise outcomes. Many people find that humming, journaling, practicing small honest sentences with safe people, and working with a trauma-informed therapist all help. Reiki and guided meditation can sit alongside that care as complementary practices.
Is it okay if speaking my truth feels scary?
Yes. For many people it does, especially if their voice was once met with anger or silence. Go slowly, start with safe people and small truths, and stop if it feels like too much. My page on nervous system regulation is a good place to begin.
Can Reiki balance the throat chakra?
Many people experience Reiki as softening in the throat and jaw. I can't promise a specific result, and Reiki is a complement to medical and mental health care, never a replacement. The page on Reiki chakra balancing explains what a session is like.
What is the throat chakra mantra and frequency?
In the yogic tradition the seed sound (bija mantra) of the throat chakra is HAM. You will also see frequencies such as 741 Hz attached to it in modern sound healing. These come from tradition and practice, not from settled science, so treat them as something to try if they feel good. See chakra frequencies and sound healing for more.
