What does a blocked chakra mean?
In yogic and energy traditions, the chakras are seven main energy centers along the center of the body. A chakra is called blocked when the qualities it governs, like safety, feeling, confidence, love, voice, intuition or connection, feel hard to reach or hard to settle.
In my own training, a chakra is described as depleted when it is running low, and in surplus when it is working too hard. I call the second overactive here. Neither is a flaw. They are descriptions of a pattern, from energy traditions and not medical diagnoses.
Signs in each of the seven chakras
These are some of the ways people describe it. You don't need to see yourself in all of them.
| Chakra | What people describe |
|---|---|
| RootRed | DepletedNot feeling grounded or secure, survival fears, anxiety about money or the future.OveractiveRigidity, hoarding, resistance to change, needing to control everything. |
| SacralOrange | DepletedSomething inhibited or not expressed: numbness, creative shutdown, difficulty feeling pleasure.OveractiveJealousy, possessiveness, emotional overwhelm, chasing pleasure or approval. |
| Solar plexusYellow | DepletedLow confidence, indecision, feeling powerless, difficulty starting.OveractiveControl, perfectionism, pushing, needing to be the one who holds it all together. |
| HeartGreen | DepletedNeeding to open up more: guardedness, rigidity, difficulty receiving love.OveractiveOver-giving, losing yourself in others, or built-up resentment and unacceptance. |
| ThroatBlue | DepletedRunning low on the energy to communicate, with emotions caught in the throat.OveractiveHaving plenty to say and not saying it, or talking so much that listening is lost. |
| Third eyeIndigo | DepletedAbilities feeling suppressed, doubt, poor concentration, disconnection from intuition.OveractiveOverthinking, vivid fantasy, not processing the perceptions that are already there. |
| CrownViolet | DepletedLack of spiritual grounding or inspiration, closing yourself off to spiritual support.OveractiveSpiritual bypassing, escaping the body, issues that still need to be worked on. |
Why chakras get stuck: the nervous system
I don't think of a blocked chakra as a clog. I think of it as a nervous system that learned what keeps it safe. A body that learned to stay on guard, stay small, stay useful or stay quiet will often show it in the same places a chakra is said to sit.
That is why the patterns usually trace back to something that made sense at the time: the father wound, the mother wound, the fawn response, people-pleasing or the money wound. Understanding the pattern is often kinder than trying to fix it.
The body side is in nervous system regulation.
Signs several centers
may be stuck
You don't have to match any of these. They are patterns people sometimes notice when more than one center feels hard to reach.
Always tired but wired
Your body can't settle, and your mind can't stop.
Feeling stuck in the same loop
The same relationship, money or work pattern keeps returning.
Disconnection from your body
You live in your head and lose touch with sensation.
Emotional extremes
Either numb or flooded, with little in between.
Hard to say no
Or hard to say yes, or hard to say what you mean.
Trusting everyone or no one
Trust swings between all or nothing.
A sense of being cut off
From people, from meaning, or from yourself.
A body that braces
Shoulders, jaw, belly or chest hold tension without a clear reason.
Recognizing yourself here doesn't mean something is wrong with you. These patterns usually began as sensible ways to stay safe.
Supporting balance, gently
Offered as reflection and not as a prescription. Go slowly and stop any time.
- Ground first. Feel your feet or your weight on the surface beneath you, and let your exhale be longer than your inhale.
- Name what is loudest. Use the table below to find the center it points to, without judging it.
- Spend a few minutes with that one center. Try the support ideas on the chakra's page, or a short practice.
- Move your body a little: walk, stretch, dance, or hum. Small and regular works better than big and rare.
- Rest afterward, and ground again. Let the effect settle before you try anything else.
If this brings up something heavy, stop and ground in whatever way helps. A licensed trauma-informed therapist can offer support that goes beyond what energy work can.
Where to start
You don't have to work through all seven. Begin with whatever is loudest.
| If this is loudest | Start with |
|---|---|
| I don't feel safe or supported | Root |
| I feel numb or creatively stuck | Sacral |
| I doubt myself and my power | Solar plexus |
| I guard my heart or give too much | Heart |
| I can't say what I mean | Throat |
| I overthink and distrust my knowing | Third eye |
| I feel disconnected or empty | Crown |

Reiki and blocked chakras
Reiki is a gentle practice of energetic support, and many people experience it as deeply restful. I'm not claiming it treats or cures anything. In a live session I move through the traditional Usui hand positions from head to foot, which pass through the areas where the chakras sit, and I work the back as well. I'm there as a vessel, and Reiki goes where it is needed.
You can read what that looks like on Reiki chakra balancing, or book a Reiki session.
A free activation to settle the whole system
Reiki for Collective Anxiety & Fear is a nervous system reset I recorded for a body that has been bracing. It is free on my YouTube channel.

Frequently asked questions
What does a blocked chakra mean?
In energy traditions, a blocked chakra is a center that is described as depleted, or sometimes overactive, so that the qualities it governs feel hard to reach or hard to settle. I think of it less as a clog and more as a nervous system that learned what keeps it safe. It is a way of describing a pattern, not a medical diagnosis.
How do I know which chakra is blocked?
Notice which area of life feels hardest right now: safety, feelings, confidence, love, speaking up, trusting yourself, or feeling connected. The table on this page matches each to a chakra. There is no test, and more than one can feel stuck at the same time.
What are the signs of a blocked chakra?
They depend on the center. Common descriptions include feeling ungrounded, numb, powerless, guarded, silenced, doubtful or disconnected. They are descriptions from energy traditions, not medical symptoms, and if something is bothering your body, please see a doctor.
Can a chakra be overactive?
Yes. In the teaching I received, a chakra can be depleted or in surplus. A surplus often looks like the opposite pattern: over-giving for the heart, overthinking for the third eye, control for the solar plexus. Both usually come from the same place, a system working hard to stay safe.
How do you unblock a chakra?
I don't promise outcomes, and I don't think of it as forcing anything open. Many people find that grounding, breath, movement, time with safe people, honest expression and working with a trauma-informed therapist all help. Reiki and guided meditation can sit alongside that care as complementary practices.
Can I unblock all my chakras at once?
I wouldn't try. Going slowly is gentler, and many people start with the root and work upward, because the lower centers are about safety. The guided chakra meditation moves through all seven at an easy pace.
Can blocked chakras cause physical symptoms?
Energy traditions link each chakra to areas of the body, but I don't make medical claims. If you have a physical symptom, please see a doctor first. Energy work is a complement to medical care, never a substitute.
Can Reiki unblock chakras?
Many people experience Reiki as settling and clarifying, and some link that to particular chakras. I can't promise a specific result. In my work I'm a vessel, and Reiki goes where it is needed. See Reiki chakra balancing for what a session is like.
