The Heart Chakra: Meaning, Signs of a Block and How to Heal ItA Reiki Master's guide to the fourth chakra
Love was never meant to be earned.
What is the heart chakra?
The heart chakra, called Anahata in Sanskrit, is the fourth of the seven main chakras. It sits at the center of the chest and is associated with love, compassion, grief, forgiveness and your ability to feel connected to other people. The name is often translated as "unstruck," a sound that exists without anything having to strike it.
It is the middle of the seven, the place where the lower three, which are about the body and the self, meet the upper three, which are about expression and spirit. When it is open, people describe feeling warm, connected and able to give and receive. When it isn't, the chest can feel armored.
You will sometimes see the heart chakra described as pink, especially in newer or rose-quartz-inspired systems. In my traditional Usui Shiki Ryoho practice, green is the color of the heart chakra, and that is the color I use here. Many people also work with pink as the softer, more tender layer of the heart.

Signs of a blocked or out-of-balance
heart chakra
These are some of the ways people describe it. You don't need to see yourself in all of them.
A guarded chest
You keep part of yourself behind armor, even with people who love you.
Difficulty receiving
Love, help and compliments feel awkward, suspicious or like they come with a bill.
Over-giving
You give until you are empty, and then feel resentful that no one noticed.
Grief held in the body
Old loss sits close to the surface, or you keep it so far down you can't find it.
Loneliness around people
You can be surrounded and still feel unseen or on the outside.
Trouble forgiving or setting limits
Either you hold on hard, or you let everything in and lose your edges.
Fear of being seen
Letting someone see the real you feels riskier than staying useful.
Wanting without expecting
You let yourself want love, but you don't really expect to get it.
Recognizing yourself here doesn't mean something is wrong with you. These patterns usually began as sensible ways to stay safe. They are descriptions from energy traditions, not medical symptoms.
Blocked, overactive and underactive
Energy traditions often describe a chakra as underactive (shut down), overactive (working too hard) or blocked. For the heart, underactive tends to look like being closed off, cold, isolated, or slow to trust. Overactive tends to look like over-giving, codependency, losing yourself in other people's needs, or clinging to connection for fear of losing it.
Both come from the same place: a body that learned it had to protect itself. For a wider look at signs across all seven centers, see blocked chakras.
Why the heart closes:
armor and conditional love
I don't think of a blocked chakra as a clog. I think of it as a nervous system that learned what keeps it safe. For many of us, love came with conditions: be useful, be easy, be good. The chest learned to brace, because being seen without those things felt risky.
That is armor, and it was sensible once. If this sounds familiar, these pages go deeper into where it starts: the father wound, the mother wound, the fawn response and people-pleasing.
The body side of this is in nervous system regulation. A heart can't open on command, and it shouldn't have to.
The heart chakra and money
Money is also an exchange, and the heart is where receiving lives. Many people can earn, produce and give, and still brace when it is time to take something in. That is a heart pattern as much as a money one.
The money chakra page explains how the root, sacral and solar plexus work together around money, and the money wound page goes into where the beliefs begin. The heart is what lets any of it land.
The heart chakra and the fourth gate of Inanna
In my work in the Temple of Mysteries, I teach Inanna's descent through seven gates. At the fourth gate, Protection, the breastplate is removed, the armor worn over the heart.
What she gives up is worn on the chest, and what shakes is the heart itself: love earned through usefulness, and the fear of being seen without the armor. The heart can't open while the chest stays braced against being seen. This is where wanting is permitted and receiving is not. As we move down the seven gates, we move up the seven chakras, and on the way back the path reverses.
Read more in The Seven Gates of Inanna, or see how I walk it in the Temple of Mysteries.
Reiki and the heart chakra
Reiki is a gentle practice of energetic support, and many people experience it as deeply restful. I'm not claiming it treats or cures anything. I offer it as a complement, a way to give the body a quiet space to settle.
Verbal Reiki
I use my voice alongside the Reiki, guiding you through imagery and somatic awareness while the Reiki is held, so the chest can soften without being pushed open.
More than one center
Nearly every activation I record works through the chakras, and I guide the energy to more than one. The heart is often part of it, especially where receiving is involved.
New to Reiki? What Is Reiki? explains it plainly, and Reiki chakra balancing covers what a session is like. If you would rather have this one on one, see my Reiki sessions.
A free activation for opening to receive love
Heart Chakra Activation to Open & Receive Love is a Reiki activation I recorded for the heart. It is free on my YouTube channel. Find a quiet spot, and go as slowly as your chest wants to.

Listen on YouTubeA simple heart chakra practice
Offered as reflection and not as a prescription. Go slowly and stop any time.
- Sit comfortably, and rest one hand at the center of your chest and the other over it.
- Breathe slowly into your hands, and notice warmth, pressure or nothing at all. All of it is fine.
- Bring to mind someone or something that is easy to love, a pet, a place, a moment, and let your chest register it.
- Quietly say to yourself, I am allowed to be held. Notice if your chest agrees, argues or braces.
- Stay for a few minutes, then place both hands on your belly and take three slow breaths to settle.
If this brings up something heavy, stop and ground in whatever way helps. A licensed trauma-informed therapist can offer support that goes beyond what a Reiki practice can.
Heart chakra affirmations
Short enough to believe. Say them slowly, or keep the one that settles you.
I am allowed to receive love
My heart is safe to open slowly
I do not have to earn my place
I can feel and stay steady
I give from fullness, not obligation
I am held

What is the heart chakra?
The heart chakra, called Anahata in Sanskrit, is the fourth of the seven main chakras in yogic and energy traditions. It is located at the center of the chest and is associated with love, compassion, grief, forgiveness and connection. Its color is green in the traditional Usui Shiki Ryoho practice I teach, though some systems also describe it as pink.
Where is the heart chakra located?
At the center of the chest, over the heart. It is an idea from energy traditions and not the physical organ. If you have chest pain or other symptoms, please see a doctor.
What are the signs of a blocked heart chakra?
People commonly describe feeling guarded, struggling to receive love or help, over-giving, holding grief, or feeling lonely around people. These are descriptions from energy traditions, not medical symptoms.
How is the heart chakra connected to receiving love?
Many people find the heart is where receiving lives in the body, because letting love in means being seen. When love came with conditions, the chest can stay braced. In my Temple of Mysteries work this is the fourth gate of Inanna, Protection.
How do you heal or open the heart chakra?
There is no single method, and I don't promise outcomes. Many people find that slow breathing, time with safe people, grief that is allowed to move, small acts of receiving, and working with a trauma-informed therapist all help. Reiki and guided meditation can sit alongside that care as complementary practices.
Is it safe to open the heart chakra, and can it cause anxiety?
Some people feel emotional or anxious when feelings begin to surface. That doesn't mean something is wrong, and it doesn't mean you should push. Go slowly, ground in your body, and stop if it feels like too much. If it stays overwhelming, a trauma-informed therapist can help. My page on nervous system regulation is a good place to begin.
Can Reiki balance the heart chakra?
Many people experience Reiki as warming and softening in the chest. I can't promise a specific result, and Reiki is a complement to medical and mental health care, never a replacement. The page on Reiki chakra balancing explains what a session is like.
What is the heart chakra mantra and frequency?
In the yogic tradition the seed sound (bija mantra) of the heart chakra is YAM. You will also see frequencies such as 639 Hz attached to it in modern sound healing. These come from tradition and practice, not from settled science, so treat them as something to try if they feel good. See chakra frequencies and sound healing for more.
