Reiki Activation vs. Verbal Reiki: What's the Difference?

I get this question a lot: what's the actual difference between a Reiki activation and verbal Reiki?

Here's the direct answer, then I'll get into why I build my practice around the verbal kind specifically.

The Three Forms, Same Energy

Traditional Reiki is hands-on. A practitioner moves through a set sequence of positions, head to foot, then flips you over for front to back, channeling energy through physical touch. With Reiki, specifically, they are attuned to the energy via a Reiki Master who has also been attuned to the lineage.

Distance Reiki does the same work without the touch. Same sequence, same intention, sent across space instead of through contact. There is a specific set of symbols and energetic permission required to make this happen, but it is no less potent than in-person Reiki.

Verbal Reiki is different again. Instead of hands, or a fully distance session, I use my voice. The energy still moves, the channel is still open, the intention is identical, but the guidance happens through words, spoken live or recorded, rather than through a hand position.

Same current. Different vehicle. And the term "Reiki Activation" can honestly apply to all three.

That's really the whole answer.

Why Verbal, Specifically

This is worth saying before I get into how I found this: I'm not approaching Reiki as an outsider inventing something new. I've been practicing since 2002, and I've been a Reiki Master in the Usui Shiki RyŨhŨ lineage, the traditional lineage the whole practice descends from, since 2008.

Verbal Reiki isn't a shortcut around the traditional training. It's what I built after two decades inside it.

And honestly, I didn't set out looking for this. I noticed it happening around me first.

I was teaching meditation for authors at the time, part of my indie author work, and students kept telling me the sessions left them unusually relaxed, more than a guided meditation usually does. Around the same time, I noticed something similar watching my then-partner, a hypnotherapist and Reiki practitioner, work.

Because I'm attuned to the energy, I noticed that in her hypnosis sessions, I felt the Reiki energy present, even though that's not what she was specifically doing. She was using hypnotherapy as her vehicle.

Then I stumbled onto verbal Reiki as an actual, named practice, through Reiki Rachael's work. And something clicked. I'd been told for years I had a gift for channeling frequency through my voice. I just hadn't put it together that this was the form it was supposed to take.

Reiki Rachael does beautiful work, and I owe finding this path to her. But what I needed to build went further than what I found. I needed something more somatic, something that could actually guide someone into trauma work and nervous system regulation, not just light codes or portal connections.

Once I understood I was late-diagnosed AuDHD myself, understanding my own nervous system stopped being optional. And I knew I wasn't the only one who needed that. I've written more about that part of the story here, if you want the fuller version.

What Actually Happens in a Verbal Session

In a live hands-on session, I'm not narrating the whole time the way I do with verbal Reiki. Instead, I move through it the way I've been trained in my traditional hands-on teaching: present, attentive, letting the energy lead from position to position.

If something comes up, a piece of information, an image, a message that wants to be spoken, I say it. If nothing does, I stay with the flow of it and talk afterward about what I felt and listen to their felt experiences.

In my 1:1 Live Reiki sessions via Zoom, I treat them much like this. I will scan your body, your energy, and go hand position by hand position. If anything comes up in the session, I'll always tell you. But there is a lot more open space in these sessions.

In verbal Reiki, the words themselves are doing something specific. They give the mind new codes to onboard, new ways of thinking it maybe hasn't tried before. We all loop, the same worn paths our thoughts keep taking, and part of what verbal Reiki does is interrupt that loop long enough for something new to get in. A new way of thinking. An insight that just might need to land.

Here's something that surprises people: if you fall asleep during a verbal Reiki session, that's not a bad sign. It's usually the best one.

When someone's nervous system takes them under mid-session, I take that as confirmation the work is landing exactly where it needs to. Their subconscious knew they needed to receive it without the conscious mind standing guard at the door.

If you can hold an activation's energy while fully awake and aware, you've probably already done a lot of integration work. But if your body pulls you under instead, that's usually a sign there's real trauma work still happening underneath, and your nervous system just took over so it could actually get in.

It happened to me too, the first time I experienced this kind of work myself. Sometimes, even when you are well-versed in this work, you're too much in your head to let it encode into the body. And the body is where we walk all of the good stuff out into this world.

Why So Many Different Activations

You'll notice I don't offer one general "Reiki healing" session.

I build them around specific things: core wounds, protection, creative fire, money. Portal days and lunation activations too, since astrology is something I genuinely have an interest in.

All of this is intentional.

Different wounds live in different places in the body, and a session built around what's actually stuck tends to reach further than a generic one. The father wound and mother wound activations are two examples of that, each one built around what that specific wound actually needs rather than folded into something more general.

Portal days work a little differently. They're less about a wound and more about giving us a way to reflect on how we've been feeling, individually and collectively. Here's the full playlist if you want to see what that's looked like so far.

Some of these come directly from my own work, the money wound especially, which is where I believe Aureya was born. I've built out a few activations around money and abundance specifically because of that. More on that to come over time.

Where to Start

If all of this calls to you and you want something fully custom, tuned to whatever you're actually carrying right now, the Custom Frequency Drop is a personalized verbal Reiki activation channeled specifically for you.

If you'd rather experience it live, in real time, with room for conversation before and after, a 1:1 Reiki session is the closer match.

Either way, if you fall asleep partway through, don't apologize for it. That's usually exactly what was supposed to happen.
