What is the earth star chakra?
The earth star chakra is said to sit below your feet, roughly six to twelve inches beneath them. It connects you to the earth and is associated with grounding, stability and the feeling of being supported. You will also see it called the earth chakra.
It's one of the chakras beyond the seven main ones. In the Usui Reiki training I received, it was handed down along with the figure of seven major and twenty-one minor chakras, and taught as something to meditate on, feel for in your own self Reiki, and test when working with someone, and not as established fact. That is how I share it here. For the bigger picture, see the minor chakras.
In my own grounding, I let something reach down from the base of my spine, through the floor and into the ground, and then I let the earth send weight back up. That felt sense is what this page is about.

Two meanings of
"earth chakra"
People use the term in two different ways. The first is the one on this page: the earth star, a point below your own feet that connects you to the ground.
The second comes from modern writing that describes places on the planet, like Uluru in Australia, as the earth's chakra points. That is a separate idea about place. If you searched for "earth chakra" and meant a location, this page is about something different, but the grounding practices below may still be useful.
Signs of feeling
ungrounded
These are some of the ways people describe it. You don't need to see yourself in all of them.
Spacey or floaty
You feel slightly outside your body, or like you're watching life from a distance.
Living in your head
Thoughts run fast, and your body feels far away or hard to read.
Clumsy or unsteady
You trip, drop things or bump into corners more than usual.
Cold hands or feet
Your extremities feel cool or disconnected, especially when you're anxious.
Overwhelmed by input
News, crowds and other people's moods stick to you and take a while to clear.
Restless and unsettled
It's hard to feel at home anywhere, or to settle into rest or sleep.
These are descriptions from energy traditions, not medical symptoms. If anything worries you, talk with a doctor.
Feel for it:
a grounding practice
Five minutes. Read it through once, then try it with your eyes closed.
- Stand barefoot if you can, with your feet about hip-width apart. Soften your knees, and feel the soles of your feet.
- Breathe slowly, and let your exhale sink down through your legs into the floor.
- From the base of your spine, imagine a cord reaching down, through the floor, through the ground, and deep into the earth.
- Let it rest about a foot below your feet. This is where the earth star is said to sit. Notice any sensation there, whether warmth, weight, a pull or nothing at all.
- Let the earth send something back up, not light but weight, the kind that makes a body feel it belongs somewhere. Feel it fill your feet, legs and hips.
- Rest for a few breaths. Then press your feet into the floor, wiggle your toes and take a slow, full breath before you move on.
Nothing needs to happen for this to be worthwhile. For more, see chakra meditation.
Ways to ground
when you feel floaty
Tap a card to open it.
GroundBare feet on the earthSoil, grass, sand or stone
Stand or sit with your bare feet on the ground outside, if you can. Let the weight of your body settle through your heels. Even a few minutes can help you feel held by something larger than your thoughts.
GroundCold waterHands, face or feet
Rinse your hands under cold water, or splash your face. The sudden, simple sensation brings attention back to the body. I use it after Reiki and meditation, too.
GroundEat and drinkSomething simple and warm
A glass of water and a small snack bring a floaty body back to earth faster than almost any technique. If you've been meditating, working with energy or feeling spacey, start here.
GroundMove slowlyA walk or gentle stretch
Walk slowly, even just around the room, and feel each foot meet the floor. Slow, steady movement is one of the simplest ways to come back into the body.
The root chakra and
the earth star
The root chakra sits at the base of the spine and is about safety and belonging in your own body. The earth star sits below your feet and is about your connection to the earth. I think of the root as the foundation of the body and the earth star as the ground that foundation stands on. When both feel steady, you tend to feel held from the inside and the outside.
Read more about the root chakra, or see the foot chakras, the small centers in the soles that sit between the two.
How Reiki can support grounding
In my one-on-one sessions I always start with grounding, because everything after it goes better when you feel held. We take time to settle into the body before the Reiki begins, and we end the same way.
I can't promise a specific result, and Reiki is a complement to medical and mental health care, never a replacement. See my Reiki sessions for how to book. If you're often overwhelmed or unsettled, my page on nervous system regulation may help too.

Frequently asked questions
What is the earth star chakra?
The earth star chakra is a center said to sit below the feet, roughly six to twelve inches beneath them, that connects you to the earth. It is associated with grounding, stability and the feeling of being supported. It's one of the chakras beyond the seven main ones, and different teachers describe it differently.
Where is the earth star chakra located?
Below your feet, usually described as somewhere between six and twelve inches down, and some teachers place it deeper. It is outside the physical body. Because it is an idea from energy traditions, its exact position varies from teacher to teacher.
What is the difference between the root chakra and the earth star chakra?
The root chakra sits at the base of the spine and is about your sense of safety and belonging in your own body. The earth star sits below your feet and is about your connection to the earth. I think of the root as the foundation of your body and the earth star as the ground that foundation stands on. See the root chakra.
What color and frequency is the earth star chakra?
Systems differ. Deep brown, black and earthy reds are the most common colors, and a few use magenta or garnet. I use a warm earthy copper brown here. You'll also see numbers such as 7.83 Hz, the Schumann resonance, linked to it. These are modern pairings from tradition and practice, not proven rules.
Is the earth chakra the same as Uluru or other places on the planet?
No. Some modern writers describe places like Uluru as chakra points of the planet, which is a different idea from the earth star below your feet. This page is about the personal earth star. The planet's points are about place and not about your own body.
What are the signs of an ungrounded or blocked earth star chakra?
People describe feeling spacey, living in their heads, being clumsy, having cold hands or feet, feeling overwhelmed by outside input, and feeling restless. These are descriptions from energy traditions, not medical symptoms. If anything worries you, please talk with a doctor.
How do you open or activate the earth star chakra?
Most people don't need to open anything. Gentle grounding practices, like standing barefoot, imagining a cord reaching into the earth and noticing the soles of the feet, help you feel it. Go slowly, and ground afterward. The practice on this page walks you through it.
What are some earth star chakra affirmations?
Try short, steady lines such as I am held by the earth, I belong here or My feet know where I am. Say them slowly while you feel your feet on the floor, and let them settle before you move on.
