The Wounded Healer: When Helping Hides Your Own WoundThe archetype, the signs, and what it means to tend your own wound while you tend to others
You are allowed to be on the receiving end.
What is the wounded healer?
The wounded healer is an old idea: that the person who helps others is often shaped by their own pain, and that the pain is part of what makes them able to help. It begins in Greek myth with Chiron, a wise centaur and healer who was wounded by an arrow and could not heal himself.
In the 20th century the psychologist Carl Jung brought the idea into modern thinking, describing how a healer's own wounds are part of their ability to heal. The writer Henri Nouwen later explored it from a spiritual and ministry point of view.
Today many people use the term for anyone who holds others up, whether as a healer, a caregiver, a teacher, a friend or the one everyone calls, while their own hurt goes unattended.
Wounded healer is an archetype and not a diagnosis. Nothing on this page is medical or mental health advice.
Signs of the wounded healer
Not a checklist, only common ways this pattern shows up.
Everyone confides in you
You are the safe person, the listener, the one who knows what to say.
Receiving feels hard
Asking for help, accepting care or being on the other side of the conversation is uncomfortable.
Your worth lives in helping
You feel most valuable when you are useful, and uneasy when you are not.
You know their pain better than yours
You can name what everyone else needs, and go blank when asked what you need.
You run on empty
You give past your limit, then feel resentful or exhausted and tell yourself it is fine.
Your healing keeps waiting
Your own work is always next, once everyone else is okay.
If several of these sound familiar, there is nothing wrong with you. It may only mean the helper in you has been working alone for a long time.
The gift and the cost
The gift. Lived experience can give you real compassion, patience and insight. People often feel safe with someone who understands pain from the inside.
The cost. When helping becomes the only place you feel worthy or safe, it can turn into armor. You stay busy with other people's wounds, and your own stays out of reach. For many people this pattern also shows up in the body as overfunctioning or fawning.
Neither side makes you good or bad. The question is only whether you are allowed to receive what you give.
My Chiron, and why this one is close to home
I was born with Chiron in Taurus, and Chiron is now moving back into that sign as I head toward my Chiron return over the next couple of years. In astrology, Chiron is the symbol of the wounded healer, so this is a wound that is very much hitting home for me right now.
I share this as a symbolic lens that I find meaningful, and not as science or prediction. You don't need to know your Chiron sign to recognize the pattern in yourself. If you are curious, an astrologer you trust can show you where Chiron sits in your own chart.
Chiron takes about 50 years to circle the zodiac, so a Chiron return arrives around age 50. Astrologers often describe it as a time when old wounds come up for attention.
For healers and Reiki practitioners
If you work with people for a living, or you practice Reiki, you may know this pattern well. Offering care to others can be a real calling, and it can also be a place to hide from your own.
Your own practice, rest and support are not a luxury. They are part of what makes the work sustainable.
Three questions for the helper
Gentle questions many helpers find useful. Take them one at a time, and let the answers be unfinished.
- Who tends to me? Notice who you go to when you are the one who needs care.
- Where do I receive? Name one place where you are only on the receiving end.
- What would I do if I weren't needed right now? Let yourself imagine it, even for a minute.
If these stir up a lot, a licensed therapist or supervisor can offer support beyond what a page like this can.

People pleasing

Read About People PleasingWhere Reiki and verbal Reiki fit
Reiki is a gentle practice of energetic support, and many people experience it as deeply restful. I'm not claiming it treats or cures anything. I offer it as a complement, a way to give the body a quiet space to settle.
Verbal Reiki
I use my voice alongside the Reiki, guiding you through imagery and somatic awareness while the Reiki is held.
Receiving, for once
Many helpers rarely get to be on the receiving end. Here the pace is slow and quiet, and there is nothing to fix and no one to take care of.

Receive only what feels right, and if you drift off along the way, let yourself.
And then, after the armor
Somatic Reiki for the Wounded Healer: After the Armor is the newer of the two. Listen to it second, or on its own, whenever you are ready to see who you are without the armor.

The Ongoing Work
Walk it in the Temple of Mysteries
Temple of Mysteries is my ongoing home for this work, built on Inanna's descent. We move through the seven gates, releasing a layer at each one, including the armor of the helper. The shedding happens through verbal Reiki, in the company of a community walking it with you.
You also receive a library of every activation from my YouTube channel, plus member-only transmissions.

What is the wounded healer?
The wounded healer is an archetype describing someone who helps or heals others out of their own wounds. The idea appears in Greek myth through the centaur Chiron, and in the 20th century through the work of Carl Jung and Henri Nouwen. It is a way of describing a pattern and not a diagnosis.
What is the wounded healer archetype?
It is the idea that the pain a person has lived through can become the source of their ability to help others. It also carries a shadow, where helping becomes a way of avoiding or postponing your own healing.
What does the wounded healer mean in Jungian psychology?
Carl Jung described the healer and the patient as sharing a wound, so that a healer's own wounds are part of what allows them to heal. Henri Nouwen later wrote about it in a spiritual and ministry context. Both are influential ideas, and neither is a clinical diagnosis.
What are the signs of a wounded healer?
People describe being the one everyone confides in, struggling to receive help, feeling more comfortable in the helper role than the one being helped, and running on empty. These are descriptions of a pattern, and they do not mean something is wrong with you.
Is being a wounded healer a bad thing?
No. Lived experience can bring real compassion and insight. It becomes costly when helping others is the only place you feel worthy or safe, or when your own needs keep waiting.
What does Chiron have to do with the wounded healer?
In Greek myth, Chiron was a wise centaur and healer who was wounded by an arrow and could not heal himself. Astrologers use Chiron to symbolize our core wounds and gifts. That is a symbolic lens and not a scientific one.
What is the Chiron return?
In astrology, Chiron takes about 50 years to circle the zodiac, so it returns to the place it held at your birth around age 50. Astrologers often describe it as a time when old wounds surface for attention. It is a symbolic framework and not a prediction.
How do I heal the wounded healer in me?
Many people find it helps to receive as well as give, to rest without earning it, to set limits on how much they carry for others, and to seek their own support. A licensed therapist can help you with this. I can't promise any outcome.
Can Reiki help the wounded healer?
Reiki is a complementary practice that many people find deeply restful, and it can give a helper a place to be on the receiving end. It does not treat or cure any condition and is not a substitute for medical or mental health care.
