What is Imbolc?

Imbolc is a Gaelic festival held on February 1 that marks the start of spring. It falls roughly halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, at the moment when the light has begun to return but winter hasn't let go.

Where the name comes from isn't settled. One common explanation links it to an Old Irish phrase meaning "in the belly," for the ewes carrying lambs. Others have proposed that it refers to ritual cleansing.

Imbolc is closely tied to Brigid, a figure of the hearth, healing, poetry and the forge in Irish tradition. It is kept today in modern Pagan and Wiccan paths as one of eight seasonal festivals called the Wheel of the Year.

There is no single way to keep Imbolc. This page shares how I work with it and leaves room for how you do.

Brigid and the old customs

A small flame is enough to begin.

Traditional Imbolc customs are warm and homely. People made Brigid's crosses from woven rushes and hung them over doors and windows for protection. They lit candles and tended fires, cleaned the house, visited holy wells, and set out a bed or a cloth for Brigid to bless.

February 1 is also St. Brigid's Day in Ireland, which became a public holiday in 2023, and the Christian feast of Candlemas follows on February 2. Scholars disagree about whether St. Brigid grew out of the older goddess, so it is best held as a connection people feel rather than a proven line.

Whether you come to Imbolc through Brigid, through the saint, through the turning of the season, or simply through spring cleaning, you're welcome here.

This year's sky

Here is what the sky is doing around Imbolc in 2027. I use astrology as a lens for reflection, never as a rule.

The Sun

Aquarius season

The Sun entered Aquarius on January 20. On February 1 it sits at about 12° Aquarius, the sign of fresh perspective, community and thinking differently.

The Moon

Waning toward the New Moon

The Full Moon in Leo falls on January 22. The New Moon in Aquarius follows on February 6, which is also Lunar New Year, a second doorway into a new beginning.

Mercury

Retrograde begins February 9

Mercury turns retrograde in Pisces on February 9 and moves forward again on March 3. Imbolc is a natural moment to tidy and clear before it begins.

The 2/2 portal falls on February 2, the day after Imbolc, and some people mark Imbolc at the astronomical midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, which falls on February 3 this year.

About the Imbolc activation

My Imbolc activation is a Reiki transmission woven with hearth fire, gentle cleansing and moonlit restoration. It treats your body as a home and walks through it room by room, with Brigid, whom I work with as a frequency in my own words, as the keeper of the hearth.

Sweep the threshold

We start at the front door with a broom made of light, sweeping away the energetic footprints and lingering static you've picked up along the way.

Open the windows to the moon

Moonlight that clarifies without punishing shows where your perception has been smudged by comparison, self-doubt and the old reflex to shrink.

Tend the hearth with Brigid

In the kitchen, a steady homecoming fire warms the old belief that support has to be earned, and the studio, bedroom and mirror each get their turn.

Light two candles at the door

One candle is for what you release and one is for what you receive, so that what is arriving has a clear place to land.

You can listen any time, not only at Imbolc. Headphones are lovely but not required. Receive only what feels right, and if you drift off along the way, let yourself.

A simple Imbolc ritual

One way to do it, not the way. Change anything that doesn't fit you.

  1. Tidy one small place in your home, such as a doorway, a windowsill or a corner of a desk. Cleaning the house is one of the oldest ways to keep Imbolc.
  2. At dusk, light a candle, or two if you like, one for what you're releasing and one for what you're receiving.
  3. Write one thing you're ready to clear and one thing you're ready to welcome. Keep each to a line.
  4. Listen to an activation, sitting or lying down. Let it carry the clearing through.
  5. Close gently. Drink some water, feel your feet on the floor, and let the candles burn a little longer or blow them out when you're ready.

If you work with Reiki, you can rest your hands on your heart and lower belly while you listen. If you don't, that's fine too.

A simple Imbolc altar

An altar doesn't need to be elaborate. A small table, shelf or windowsill is enough. Here is what you might gather:

  • A white, cream or pale cloth for the feeling of early light
  • Candles, for the hearth and the returning sun
  • A Brigid's cross, traditionally woven from rushes, or a simple woven piece of your own
  • A bowl of water, for cleansing
  • Something green or early: a sprig, a bulb, a new shoot
  • Your two lines on paper, with your journal beside it

Take it down when the season feels finished. The altar is a place to pause, not a rule to keep.

Is Imbolc the same as St. Brigid's Day or Candlemas?

They are neighbors rather than the same thing. Imbolc is the Gaelic festival on February 1. St. Brigid's Day is the feast of Ireland's patron saint, also on February 1. Candlemas is a Christian feast on February 2.

Some scholars think the saint's feast absorbed the older festival, and others think the connection is looser than that. The early sources say little about what Imbolc looked like before Christianity, so a lot of what we know comes from later customs.

Many people keep all three, or one, or none. Nobody has to give up their tradition to be welcome here.

The Ongoing Work

Tend the flame in the Temple

Temple of Mysteries is a living mystery school built on Inanna's descent. Inside, the seven gates are walked rather than read: the descent, the transmutation, and the return as a new version of you, with live circles and verbal Reiki activations along the way. Imbolc is where the return begins to show.

Frequently asked questions

What is Imbolc, and when is it?

Imbolc is a Gaelic festival held on February 1 that marks the start of spring, roughly halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. Some people mark it at the astronomical midpoint, which falls on February 3 in 2027.

How do you celebrate Imbolc?

There is no one way. Many people light candles, tidy or clean their home, weave a Brigid's cross, set up a small altar, write what they are clearing and welcoming, or listen to a guided meditation or Reiki activation. This page has a simple five-step ritual you can adapt.

What do you put on an Imbolc altar?

A pale cloth, candles, a Brigid's cross or something woven, a bowl of water, something green and early such as a sprig or bulb, and your intentions on paper. Keep it simple. It is a place to pause.

Who is Brigid?

Brigid is a figure of Irish tradition linked to the hearth, healing, poetry and smithcraft. She is closely tied to Imbolc, and February 1 is the feast day of St. Brigid, Ireland's patron saint. Scholars disagree about how the goddess and the saint are connected.

Is Imbolc the same as St. Brigid's Day or Candlemas?

Not exactly. Imbolc is the Gaelic festival on February 1, St. Brigid's Day is the feast of the saint also on February 1, and Candlemas is a Christian feast on February 2. They overlap in time and in themes of light and renewal, and many people keep more than one.
