What Is a Modern Mystery School? Inside the Temple of Mysteries

I track all of the major portals throughout the year, and this one has felt different—in a good way.

I'm writing this in the thick of the Lion's Gate window, the stretch that opened July 26 and closes August 12. If you're familiar with this portal, you know that it peaks on 8/8.

Lion's Gate usually reads as a big manifestation gate. One for leaning into personal desire, and personal power.

This year, with Jupiter in Leo opposing Pluto in Aquarius and the node shift underway, it's landing differently for me: less like a window for asking for more, and more like a shift out of the scarcity story entirely.

You feel it, right?

We're being asked to step out of a world built on wealth inequality, and into something that actually holds value for the majority of us, not just the few who've already been receiving.

That shift, out of scarcity and into something truer and more shared, is exactly what's been sitting underneath everything I've built toward Temple of Mysteries, even before I had language for it.

What a Mystery School Actually Is

Long before "online course" was a category, ancient traditions had places built specifically to guide someone through a direct, embodied initiation. This wasn't necessarily information to memorize, but an experience to be changed by.

The Eleusinian Mysteries in ancient Greece, temple traditions in Egypt, the Orphic mysteries—all of these shared a common shape: a seeker entered gradually, was guided through symbolic death and rebirth, and came out the other side with something no lecture alone could have given them.

The word "mystery" here doesn't mean secret for its own sake, though. So don't let it trick you. It comes from the Greek mysterion, something revealed only through direct experience, not explanation. In other words, embodiment. Not knowledge alone. 

You couldn't be told what happened in the Eleusinian rites. You had to walk through them.

In my opinion and experience, this is the actual distinction between a mystery school and a course. A course teaches you something. And while that can be meaningful, it sometimes isn't enough to truly know it and live it. A mystery school, on the other hand, walks you through something, in your body, at the pace the threshold actually requires. There is no rushing. No forced knowing. Only embodied practice. 

What a Modern Mystery School Looks Like

The ancient mysteries had one big constraint a modern one doesn't: everyone had to show up to the same temple, on the same day, once a year. That worked when your initiates all lived within walking distance of Eleusis. It doesn't work for a scattered, global, wildly different group of nervous systems all arriving at their own pace.

So a modern mystery school has to solve for that differently. Self-paced instead of one fixed rite, so you can walk a gate when you're actually ready for it, not when the calendar says so. But not solitary either, which is why the live circles matter as much as the self-paced path does. Some months in myth and discussion, others in a shared verbal Reiki activation, others yet with wisdom on ways to move through a gate with tools both ancient and new. So the work still happens in company even without everyone standing in the same room.

And the embodiment piece has to translate too. There's no priestess leading you through a physical rite in the dark anymore. What replaces it, for me, is the activation itself, a channeled verbal reiki transmission that does something in your actual body, not a lecture about what the body might feel.

The other thing a modern mystery school has to account for that the ancient ones didn't: most of us arrive already carrying trauma, conditioning, and/or a nervous system trained by scarcity to brace instead of receive. That's not separate from the wealth inequality thread I opened with, it's the same pattern showing up in the body. A modern mystery school has to be trauma-informed by design, not a one-time rite you either survive or don't.

Why This Isn't Just Historical

I'm not claiming a direct lineage back to Eleusis. What I am claiming is that the shape of that work, gradual initiation, symbolic loss, embodied return, is exactly what Inanna's descent through the seven gates already models. And it's exactly what a body needs when it's actually transforming rather than just learning about transformation.

If you read my first blog post, The Seven Gates of Inanna already, you know the shape: a gate that asks you to release something, and receive something else in its place.

That's not metaphor for me.

It's the literal architecture of how I've come to understand real change happening in the body. Not all at once. Not through willpower—but gate by gate, each one walked twice. Once as you descend, and again as you ascend.

Temple of Mysteries

I didn't set out to build a mystery school. Temple of Mysteries started as a membership, a place to keep offering the verbal reiki activations I was already channeling to people standing where I'd stood. It was only recently, sitting with years of my own work with Inanna, that I realized I'd already built all the pieces without putting them together. Life is funny that way. I had the activations, the gates, a book I'm writing called She Who Rises. Everything has been assembling itself the whole time. I just hadn't named what they were becoming. The pieces hadn't connected yet.

What they were becoming is this: a living mystery school for the descent and the return, structured around the same seven gates of Inanna: Safety, Worth, Shedding False Identity, Releasing the Need for Protection, Surrendering Attachment to Outcomes, Releasing Scarcity, and Embracing Authenticity. And it's not really about Inanna specifically, though her frequency is certainly woven throughout. It's about what tools we actually use as we're walking through gates like these, and finding our way back out the other side, together.

Inside, that looks like She Who Rises, the self-paced path through each gate, paired with monthly live circles, some months in myth and discussion, others in live verbal Reiki activation. You enter wherever you're currently being called, and you're free to return to any gate, any time, as many times as the spiral brings you back to it. 

I'm not holding this space as someone who figured it out once and is now teaching from outside it. I've walked these gates more than once myself, and I keep returning.
